US President Donald Trump shared his ideas for de-escalating the conflict in Ukraine during a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday, according to the Kremlin. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Putin received the proposals "with understanding," though he did not provide further details on the specific measures suggested or the Russian leader’s response.

Since taking office in January, Trump has expressed a consistent interest in facilitating an end to the more than four-and-a-half-year war between Russia and Ukraine. Despite multiple diplomatic efforts, negotiations between the two countries have largely stalled, with both sides increasing long-range missile attacks and other military operations in recent months.

In parallel with the conversation between Trump and Putin, US, Ukrainian, and European officials convened in Miami on Friday for renewed diplomatic talks aimed at breaking the deadlock. These efforts reflect Washington’s continued search for a pathway to reduce hostilities and achieve a resolution to the conflict.

The war, which began in early 2022 following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, has resulted in significant casualties and widespread displacement. Although previous ceasefire proposals and peace talks have been attempted, none have yet led to a sustainable end to the fighting.

The Kremlin’s statement did not clarify whether Moscow would consider any of the de-escalation measures proposed by the US side. Meanwhile, both Russia and Ukraine continue military operations on multiple fronts, underscoring the challenging environment for diplomacy.

The Miami diplomatic gathering and Trump’s outreach to Putin highlight ongoing international efforts to seek a negotiated settlement to the Ukraine war, despite recent intensified military confrontations and entrenched positions on both sides.
