US President Donald Trump’s media company has launched a service offering early access to his social media posts on Truth Social, raising concerns about potential ethical conflicts and market manipulation. The new product, called Truth API, began on Saturday, providing Wall Street traders with advance information ahead of the posts becoming available to the general public.
Truth Social, owned by Trump Media & Technology, allows subscribers—primarily high-frequency trading firms—to receive Trump's posts milliseconds before they appear on the open platform. This early access presents opportunities for rapid market moves based on Trump’s announcements, which often touch on policy, trade, foreign affairs, and economic decisions. Market observers warn that such information could be exploited for profit, potentially benefiting traders with privileged insights and raising questions about insider trading and the use of presidential communications for private gain.
Trump’s online statements have been known to trigger significant market volatility. In recent weeks, posts threatening increased tariffs on Canada, termination of a nuclear agreement with Saudi Arabia, and escalation of the conflict involving Iran have unsettled various asset classes, including currencies, energy stocks, and commodities. Traders equipped to receive these posts ahead of the broader public could leverage this advantage to execute rapid trades and generate substantial returns.
Joe Saluzzi, co-founder of Themis Trading, estimated that about 100 high-frequency trading firms might subscribe to the new service, describing Trump's posts as “market-moving information.” Saluzzi noted the value of early knowledge allowing traders to anticipate price swings caused by Trump's abrupt policy announcements and reversals, increasing profit potential on both upswings and downturns.
Critics have expressed concerns about fairness and market integrity. Irene Aldridge, head of Able Alpha Trading, remarked that if a corporate CEO were involved in a similar arrangement, it could constitute criminal behavior, emphasizing the unique position of the president as a policymaker with access to sensitive information.
Trump Media & Technology defended the service, accusing Democratic critics of misunderstanding its nature or opposing it on ideological grounds. The company stated that posts are distributed to both traders and the public simultaneously and rejected claims of unfair advantage. However, market analysts countered that the critical factor is not simultaneous release but the ability of subscribers to process and act on the information faster than retail investors.
In addition to Trump's posts, the Truth API may feature contributions from other high-profile Truth Social users, including Trump’s eldest sons, Donald Jr. and Eric, whose comments also attract significant attention from the platform’s followers.
The launch of Truth API highlights ongoing challenges in balancing market transparency, equitable access to information, and the influence of real-time communications from public officials. As artificial intelligence technologies enhance traders' abilities to analyze and react to news quickly, concerns persist about the equitable functioning of financial markets in an era of increasingly rapid and exclusive information flows.
