President Donald Trump has proposed renaming the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE) to “NICE” in an effort to counter criticism of the agency's immigration enforcement tactics. The suggestion, made on Saturday through his social media platform Truth Social, included an online poll which invited users to choose between “ICE Agents” and “NICE Agents,” drawing approximately 10,000 votes within the first hour, though results were not disclosed.

Trump argued that the rebranding would disrupt negative media narratives, stating that the current acronym “ICE” has been misrepresented by what he termed "Fake News Media" and that the agency’s personnel are “Great Patriots” operating under challenging conditions. His proposal involves adding the letter “N” for “National” to create the name “NICE,” which he claimed would provide a “much more prestigious name” and frustrate critics. He speculated that opponents would find it difficult to criticize facilities or agents described with the more positive “NICE” label.

It remains unclear whether the president is fully committed to formally renaming the agency, as the remark appeared alongside other informal polls, including one about derogatory spellings of the opposition party's name. The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the ICE proposal.

The timing of Trump's remarks follows recent heightened tensions at the Delaney Hall migrant detention center in Newark, where weeks of protests have resulted in violent clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement. Authorities arrested several out-of-state activists during these confrontations, among them individuals linked to the progressive nonprofit Sunrise Movement, which has campaigned to shut down the facility and abolish ICE. The protests reflect broader national debates around immigration enforcement, intensified by past incidents such as the deaths of Alex Pretti and Rene Good during anti-ICE demonstrations in Minneapolis earlier this year, events that have resonated with activists and received cultural attention.

ICE itself has undergone organizational changes since its creation in 2002 under the Homeland Security Act, initially known as the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (BICE). The agency's current name was officially adopted by the Department of Homeland Security in 2007, replacing the original designation. Trump's suggestion revives discussions about the agency’s public image amid ongoing polarization surrounding immigration policy.
