An online fundraiser aimed at covering legal expenses for Kaitlyn Tracey, a Canadian national facing deportation after an assault incident at the Jersey Shore, fell significantly short of its goal. The campaign raised $4,857 of the targeted $10,000, according to the final tally.

Tracey, 33, was ordered to leave the United States following a guilty plea entered Tuesday. She admitted to one count of simple assault in connection with an incident in which she slapped a teenage girl wearing pro-Trump apparel. The plea was submitted remotely from a detention facility in Texas where she was held by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

As part of the plea agreement, Tracey was sentenced to one day in jail, which was credited as time served, before her deportation to Canada. Earlier efforts to raise money for her legal defense included a GoFundMe campaign organized by her husband, Matthew Geroni. That campaign was removed by GoFundMe for violating the platform’s policy against fundraising for individuals accused of violent crimes.

Tracey’s case attracted attention due to its political overtones and immigration status considerations. Authorities indicated the plea deal and deportation represented a resolution to the legal proceedings in connection with the assault charge and her immigration status in the United States.
