Washington, D.C., is set to host an unprecedented Independence Day celebration this year, with former President Donald Trump announcing plans for a record-breaking fireworks display over the National Mall. The event, scheduled for July 4, will mark the 250th anniversary of the United States, known as the semiquincentennial.

The fireworks show is expected to feature a staggering 851,000 pyrotechnic devices, which would surpass the current Guinness World Record of 810,904 fireworks set in 2016 during New Year festivities in the Philippines. That prior record-setting event lasted just over an hour in rainy conditions.

Trump revealed the plan on June 15, announcing the display as the finale of a large-scale celebration dubbed “Freedom 250.” The event will take place at the recently renovated Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool and will include a broad array of patriotic elements.

Department of the Interior officials have detailed the logistics of the extensive fireworks show. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum indicated that the launch sites will extend beyond the traditional launch points near the Reflecting Pool, including nearly two dozen barges strategically positioned around the city. Dr. Kevin Griess, superintendent of National Mall and Memorial Parks, explained that pallets of explosives will be positioned both along the edges of the water basin, as well as on approximately 13 barges on the Potomac River and seven additional barges along the West Potomac area.

The planned scale of this year’s display dramatically exceeds last year’s Independence Day event, which featured roughly 7,000 fireworks, according to Griess. Burgum described the forthcoming show as “many minutes longer and much more celebratory.”

In addition to the fireworks, the event will feature musical performances by military bands, orchestras, and ceremonial units playing selections ranging from patriotic tunes to songs from Trump’s personal playlist. The program also includes military flyovers and airshows showcasing top military pilots and equipment.

Trump is slated to deliver a keynote address at the celebration, underscoring the patriotic tone of the event. He described the gathering on his social media platform as an opportunity to commemorate the nation’s 250th birthday with a “historic occasion” capped by the largest fireworks show ever staged in the nation’s capital.

The “Freedom 250” event was established by a Trump executive order as part of a series of commemorations marking the country’s semiquincentennial. The Department of the Interior did not immediately provide further comment on the plans.
