US President Donald Trump issued a stern warning to Iran following an attempted attack on a Flydubai flight traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv that was thwarted by passengers before an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday. Trump cautioned that Iran would face severe consequences if found responsible for the incident.
The flight, carrying primarily Israeli passengers, diverted to Saudi Arabia after the co-pilot reportedly attacked the captain mid-flight. Passengers intervened to prevent the plane from crashing, and following the emergency landing, the passengers were safely returned to Israel, where they were met with public acclaim.
In comments at the White House on Thursday, Trump indicated preliminary information suggested Iranian involvement. “I would say the answer, based on what I’m hearing, is yes but we’re working on it right now,” he said when asked whether Iran had any connection to the events. When pressed on potential US retaliation, Trump responded, “Oh, they’ll be hit very hard, don’t worry.”
The warning coincides with a broader US military buildup in the region. Reports indicate that Washington has recently deployed additional Patriot missile batteries to Saudi Arabia and Qatar to safeguard key energy infrastructure against possible Iranian retaliation. Additionally, the USS Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier strike group is en route to the Middle East, potentially joining two other carrier groups already stationed there.
Saudi and Emirati authorities have been investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. Saudi officials stated that the co-pilot was transferred to the United Arab Emirates under escort of an Emirati security team. Initial findings suggest the co-pilot attacked the captain during the flight.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the suspect as having undergone “Islamist radical indoctrination” and characterized the attacker as “suicidal,” claiming the individual called out to the aircrew with statements such as “Kill me, kill me.” Netanyahu indicated that the UAE would lead the official investigation, with Israel participating to ensure thorough inquiry.
The UAE’s chief prosecutor confirmed that the investigation would consider whether terrorism was involved or intended.
As authorities continue to examine the motives and affiliations behind the attempted attack, tensions in the region remain elevated amid concerns over escalating hostilities tied to Iran and its activities.
