New violence escalated in the Middle East as the United States launched a further series of strikes targeting Iranian military assets, marking the ninth consecutive night of attacks. The operations, announced by US Central Command (Centcom) on July 25, are aimed at weakening Iran’s capabilities to conduct attacks on commercial vessels and civilian mariners in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping lane for global oil supplies.
The renewed offensive comes amid collapsed negotiations for a ceasefire and ongoing tensions centered around control and access to the Strait of Hormuz. Since the conflict’s onset on February 28, Iran has responded to US and allied actions by targeting regional military forces and infrastructure while effectively limiting traffic through the strait, through which approximately 20% of the world’s oil previously transited.
Kuwaiti military authorities reported intercepting hostile drone attacks attributed to Iran, emphasizing that recent explosions heard in the region were the result of defensive measures. The Kuwait Army confirmed engagement against the drone assaults in a statement circulated on social media.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced a “surprise attack” on an enemy command center located in the Al-Tanf region of Syria. The IRGC framed this operation as retaliation for the deaths of Iranian soldiers, describing the target as a special operations command post. Iranian statements also claimed attacks on two US military bases in Kuwait, citing damages to transportation and infrastructure nodes, including an under-construction nuclear facility. Jordan reported intercepting missiles amid the heightened hostilities.
The intensification of military exchanges followed a weekend that saw three new US service member fatalities and one missing in action. Two deaths occurred in Jordan during Iranian missile and drone attacks, while another US soldier was killed in northern Iraq during the controlled disposal of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian drone, according to Centcom.
President Donald Trump addressed the strikes in a briefing, stating the operations were conducted in honor of the fallen service members. “We hit them very hard again tonight, and we did that in honour of the, probably three, it’s probably three great patriots,” Trump said. He expressed regret over the casualties, framing the losses as part of an effort to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.
The recent casualties raised the total number of US military deaths related to the ongoing conflict to 17. Bahrain also alerted its population to incoming danger as air raid sirens sounded, urging civilians to seek immediate shelter amid the uncertain security environment in the Gulf region.
