On a sweltering afternoon in August 2020, forensic DNA analyst Zhang Mengting arrived at a rundown shack in Gucheng county, Xiangyang, Hubei province, responding to a police tip that a suspect in a serious crime might have spent the night there. Amidst swarming mosquitoes and stifling heat, Zhang conducted a painstaking search of the scene. Her efforts paid off when she identified a barely visible dark-red bloodstain, no larger than two millimeters, on a worn sleeping mat. Though not human blood, the stain had been left by a mosquito that had fed on the suspect’s blood before being swatted. By carefully collecting this microscopic trace and analyzing the DNA, police were eventually led to the suspect, culminating in the resolution of the case.

Zhang credits her scientific background and attention to detail for enabling her to uncover such unlikely evidence. At 32, Zhang is a native of Xiangyang and holds a biotechnology degree from Qingdao University. After working in new media and advertising, she joined the Xiangyang Public Security Bureau in 2019 through an open recruitment program seeking DNA analysts from outside the traditional police academy system. Her entry into police work fulfilled a childhood ambition; years earlier, she had dreamed of becoming an officer, drawn by the challenge of piecing together small details to reveal the truth.

Her role in the bureau’s criminal technology unit encompasses a broad spectrum of forensic disciplines, including DNA analysis, trace evidence examination, forensic medicine, chemical and physical testing, document examination, and digital evidence analysis. Zhang emphasized that modern policing increasingly integrates specialists from diverse fields, blending traditional investigative methods with advanced technologies such as big data and artificial intelligence to enhance efficiency and accuracy.

Zhang’s work has played a vital role in numerous cases. In 2024, when a bottle was thrown from a high-rise in Xiangyang hitting a car below, she extracted DNA from the bottle’s rim to help narrow down suspects among more than 1,000 residents without resorting to mass blood collection. In another case involving a family separated for 50 years due to abduction and trafficking, Zhang and colleagues used genetic data from the suspect’s brothers to reconstruct the late father’s DNA profile. This innovative approach enabled authorities to confirm the family connection, reuniting mother and son after decades apart.

Since joining the force, Zhang has processed over 16,400 biological samples without error, contributing to the identification of suspects in more than 320 challenging cases, as well as the recovery of 35 missing or trafficked individuals and the reunion of 42 families. In recognition of her contributions, Zhang was awarded the Hubei May 1 Labor Medal earlier this year.

Though much of her work is conducted behind the scenes in the laboratory, Zhang finds personal fulfillment in knowing her expertise helps bring closure to victims and their families. She frequently inquires about the outcomes of cases after her analyses are complete, motivated by the impact her scientific skills have on real-world investigations. Reflecting on her career, Zhang underscores the value of scientific rigor, determination, and public service as guiding principles in her pursuit of justice.
