The transformation extends beyond Dart’s on-field performance to mastering a new offensive approach. Dart acknowledged that the offense demands skills he had not previously encountered, emphasizing growth gained over the offseason. “I just feel like I’ve grown a ton through this off-season,” he said.

Harbaugh brings experience in developing young quarterbacks after overseeing Lamar Jackson’s remarkable Year 2 leap with the Ravens. While expectations remain measured for Dart, the Giants have brought back Greg Roman, the architect behind the Ravens’ dominant rushing attack, to serve as senior offensive assistant and run game coordinator. Roman works alongside offensive coordinator Matt Nagy and quarterbacks coach Brian Callahan, forming a coaching group blending diverse offensive philosophies.

The Giants are transitioning Dart to operate more frequently from under center, a departure from his predominant shotgun role in college and during his rookie season. Last year, Dart lined up under center for just over 20% of his plays, the third-lowest rate among quarterbacks with significant dropbacks. This season’s opener saw that number rise to more than 50%, aligning with the team’s shift toward a power running game. The addition of fullback Pat Ricard from Baltimore signals a commitment to an offense that features strong rushing, which sets up play-action passing opportunities.

Operating under center introduces new challenges for Dart, particularly the increased need for precise footwork and timing with receivers, as well as the difficulty of reading defenses when his back is turned post-snap. Quarterbacks coach Callahan highlighted footwork and eye discipline as ongoing focuses in Dart’s development. Dart himself identified these areas as targets for improvement early in the offseason, noting the importance of quicker reads and more consistent footwork.

Despite rapid progress, perfecting these skills remains a work in progress. Dart has demonstrated the ability to make explosive plays, such as a 35-yard scramble touchdown in only his third start. However, coaches and Dart agree that consistency, including making safer, shorter passes, will be critical to reducing volatility in his play.

Coach Harbaugh has balanced enforcing discipline with encouraging improvisation, initially limiting Dart’s movement outside the pocket during spring practices before relaxing those restrictions to allow for development on scramble drills. Dart’s lone touchdown pass in the preseason came on a play extending outside the pocket, illustrating the coaching staff’s intent to utilize his mobility as part of the offense.

Dart expressed confidence in the offense’s structure and the options it provides to counter defensive looks, describing the learning process as both challenging and rewarding. “There’s a lot of kills, alerts that go into really every play,” he said. “We’re able to play fast, but at the same time, there’s a lot that’s on the quarterback’s shoulders. It’s really just another growth, another stepping point into my experiences as an NFL quarterback.”

As the Giants look to establish a foundation for success, Dart’s development and adaptation to an evolving offensive scheme will be crucial factors in determining whether the team can rebound.
