The Transportation Security Administration (TSA), in collaboration with the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) and bus operator Landline, has launched a pilot program offering passengers an alternative way to check in and clear security for flights departing from Boston Logan International Airport. The service, which began June 1 and runs through the summer, operates out of a remote terminal in Framingham, Massachusetts, approximately 25 miles west of Logan.
The program is designed to reduce airport congestion by allowing travelers to start their journey in the suburbs, bypassing traditional check-in and security lines at Logan. Passengers check in for their flights and undergo TSA screening at the Framingham facility before boarding a shuttle bus that transports them directly to the airport. This service currently supports departures for Delta Air Lines and JetBlue from 5:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.
Massport describes the experience as a “calmer” alternative to the typical airport routine. Parking at the Framingham terminal costs $7 per day, and check-in lines have reportedly been minimal. Passengers receive printed boarding passes for both their airline flights and the connecting bus. Onsite TSA security includes a single metal detector and bag scanner, with PreCheck holders given priority but no separate lanes.
While some travelers appreciate the reduced stress and the ability to remain together as a group before flights, the service does present timing challenges. The bus schedule requires passengers to check in well in advance of their flights, with the last departure currently set for 11 a.m. Passengers must arrive at least 45 minutes before bus departure, which can result in extended wait times at Logan following the bus ride. Frequent fliers holding expedited screening passes such as TSA PreCheck and Clear may find the early start unnecessary.
The remote terminal itself is small, with limited amenities. Post-security facilities include only vending machines, water, and restrooms; there are no retail or food options. The one-way bus fare from Framingham to Logan is $9, a substantial savings compared to rideshare costs, which can exceed $70 from the same area. Children travel free with an accompanying adult. Return trips can be arranged via the Logan Express bus service.
Passengers are dropped off at secure locations near their departure gates, with Delta travelers arriving near the A gates and JetBlue users in a separate area. Checked baggage is transported directly from the remote terminal to the aircraft, removing the need for passengers to handle their bags after the initial check-in.
The TSA and Massport are monitoring usage, reporting that more than 3,400 travelers have used the service so far, with additional reservations pending. Officials have suggested plans to potentially expand remote check-in operations to other off-airport locations, including cruise terminals and theme parks, as part of ongoing efforts to ease airport congestion nationwide.
