Two people were killed and two others injured Wednesday morning when a vehicle struck pedestrians in the parking lot of Tsawwassen Mills mall on the Tsawwassen First Nation in British Columbia. Delta Police say the driver may have experienced a medical emergency before the collision, which occurred around 10:25 a.m. local time.

According to authorities, four people were hit in the incident, with two succumbing to their injuries. The injured were taken to local hospitals for treatment. Police emphasized that the crash was not connected to an event taking place at the mall commemorating the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, despite speculation and social media reports suggesting otherwise.

Delta Police spokesperson remarked that the investigation is still in its early stages as officers work to fully understand the circumstances leading to the crash. There has been no indication of an ongoing threat to public safety. Officials declined to provide further details about the victims’ ages, the driver’s condition, or the vehicle involved.

In a social media statement, Prime Minister Mark Carney identified the deceased as “two beloved elders” and extended condolences to their families and the Tsawwassen First Nation community. He described the loss as “devastating,” especially given the significance of the day, which is set aside for remembrance and reflection.

Tsawwassen First Nation released a statement expressing deep sorrow over the tragedy, noting that it occurred amid a Truth and Reconciliation walk. The nation confirmed there was no evidence that the collision was intentional. They requested privacy for affected families and ongoing response efforts, while thanking police, emergency responders, and community members for their assistance.

Witnesses at the scene described a chaotic aftermath. Sofia McGinn, who was visiting the mall with her toddler and parents, said she was just inside the mall doors when the collision took place and noticed security and emergency personnel quickly responding. She described an atmosphere of shock, with bystanders assisting victims and emergency crews administering CPR.

Ms. McGinn also recalled seeing a black pickup truck with a trailer carrying a red barrel-type object in the parking lot about 15 minutes before the crash. A vehicle matching this description appeared in social media footage following the incident.

British Columbia Premier David Eby offered his sympathies to the community, acknowledging the pain caused by the tragedy on a day already marked for solemn reflection.

Officials continue to investigate the precise factors contributing to the collision as community members mourn those lost and support those injured.
