Australian boxing figure Jeff Fenech has been hospitalized following a heart-related health scare, casting uncertainty over his role in preparing his protégé, Tim Tszyu, for an upcoming world title fight. The incident was revealed by Newcastle NRL player Bradman Best, who is married to Fenech’s daughter Kayla and has spoken publicly about his father-in-law’s condition.

Best, who is set to make his Test debut for Australia against Fiji on Sunday, expressed concern over Fenech’s health but remained optimistic about his recovery. “He’s tough, he’s always a fighter,” Best said, adding that Fenech had been a significant influence throughout his own athletic journey. “He’s been in there with a few heart problems but he’ll be good,” he noted.

According to reports, Fenech was admitted to Strathfield Private Hospital about ten days ago after experiencing severe fatigue, breathing difficulties, and feeling generally unwell. The timing of the hospitalization comes as a major blow for Tszyu, who is preparing for a high-profile fight against Erislandy Lara, the Cuban-American WBA middleweight champion. The bout is expected to take place in November or December and represents a crucial step for Tszyu as he aims to become a two-division world champion, following in Fenech’s footsteps.

Fenech has been serving as head trainer for Tszyu, including during his recent upset victory over American legend Errol Spence in July. Tszyu praised Fenech’s guidance after that fight, highlighting the four-weight world champion’s role in inspiring his unanimous decision win. However, it is now understood that Fenech will likely be unable to participate fully in Tszyu’s training camp, particularly in physically demanding activities such as padwork, as he focuses on recovering.

The boxing community and Tszyu’s camp remain hopeful Fenech will regain his health in time to be involved in a limited capacity when the proposed title fight approaches. Meanwhile, Best and others close to Fenech continue to offer support as he navigates this health challenge.
