Thomas Tuchel has expressed the view that England may need up to a decade to find a suitable replacement for Harry Kane as the national team’s leading striker. Kane, who is approaching the milestone of 100 goals for England, recently scored his 87th international goal in the team’s 2-0 Nations League victory over the Czech Republic.
Speaking after the match, Tuchel highlighted Kane’s goal-scoring prowess and leadership both on and off the pitch. “He is closing in, he scored again,” Tuchel said, referring to Kane’s continued threat in front of goal. Kane has now scored 13 goals shy of the century mark, a target he has the opportunity to reach in upcoming matches.
Tuchel, who managed Bayern Munich when Kane transferred from Tottenham Hotspur in 2023, described the striker as a "complete package" and praised his professionalism and influence within the squad. “He is the highest level of goalscorer,” Tuchel said, acknowledging that Kane is unmatched in his role. “You will not get another Harry Kane. We look for different options and solutions.”
In the recent match against the Czech Republic, midfielder Jude Bellingham was deployed as a center forward, signaling the team’s search for alternatives to Kane’s unique style. Tuchel stated that while there will be successors, none are expected to replicate Kane’s exact qualities. “There will be someone else but it will not be Harry or a copy of Harry,” he noted. “We will find a solution when it comes to it but maybe not me, it might be another ten years.”
Kane, 33, made his England debut in 2015, scoring within two minutes of entering the game. He has since become a central figure in the squad, known for his leadership during training and competitive fixtures. In March 2023, Kane became England’s all-time top scorer with 54 goals, surpassing Wayne Rooney’s previous record.
Looking ahead, Kane is poised to equal goalkeeper Peter Shilton’s record of 125 England caps during the upcoming Nations League fixture against the Czech Republic at Wembley, following a potential appearance against Croatia. His continued presence remains a key asset for England as they navigate the evolution of their attacking options.
