England manager Thomas Tuchel has emphasized maintaining high standards for his team ahead of their Nations League match against the Czech Republic, despite acknowledging that a repeat of the 7-0 victory over Croatia may not be feasible.
The match, taking place this evening, offers England an opportunity to secure qualification to the knockout stages of the tournament. The Nations League groups are determined first by points and then by head-to-head results, meaning that a win against the Czech Republic would place England above their group rivals and potentially make it difficult for Croatia to surpass their earlier goal difference.
Tuchel, however, cautioned against expecting a similar goal margin, underscoring that the standard he seeks is based on the team's attitude, intensity, and overall performance rather than the scoreline. “If a similar performance means 6-0 or 8-0, I just have to tell everyone we have the wrong expectations,” he said. “We should not expect the result. If we expect a similar performance in terms of humbleness, attitude, intensity, on and off the ball, that’s what we want. That’s the standard.”
Recognizing the progress made by the Czech team, Tuchel noted their improvement over the course of the group stage, citing their competitive showing in recent matches, including their efforts against Spain. He described the Czech Republic as having posed several challenges despite their position in the standings, stating, “It can look totally different and it will look totally different because it’s a totally different set-up... The statistics, the result does not speak the language that we saw in improvement in their team.”
Tuchel stressed the importance of holding realistic expectations about the game, especially regarding goal-scoring opportunities, and highlighted the aspects his team can control. “The things we can influence, we want to influence on the same level, but it can look different,” he added.
England enters the match seeking to reaffirm their dominance in the group and advance comfortably, but Tuchel’s remarks suggest a focus on consistent performance and adaptability against a Czech side demonstrating growth and resilience.
