Daniel Tupou’s unexpected decision to retire has taken the Sydney Roosters by surprise, with club officials initially expecting him to continue playing next season. The announcement came during end-of-season reviews this week, when Tupou informed head coach Trent Robinson of his intention to step away from the game.

Tupou, widely regarded as one of the Roosters’ most prolific try scorers, was on track to surpass the 200-try milestone and become the club’s most capped player had he extended his career. Over his tenure with the Roosters, he secured four premiership titles and built a reputation as an integral yet often undervalued contributor to the team’s success.

His departure leaves an opening on the wing, and the club may now look to emerging talent Rex Bassingthwaighte to fill the position. Bassingthwaighte could partner with established players Tommy Talau or new Manly recruit Reuben Garrick, as the Roosters prepare for the upcoming season. The team will be tasked with managing the transition following the loss of a player with Tupou’s extensive experience and accomplishments.
