Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer have both commended Qatar for its instrumental role in facilitating the recent memorandum of understanding (MoU) reached between the United States and Iran. The agreement, seen as a significant diplomatic breakthrough, aims to advance regional peace and stability.
In a message posted on the social media platform X, Erdogan expressed gratitude to the leaderships of the US and Iran, as well as Pakistan, for their mediation efforts. He also acknowledged the support extended by Qatar and Saudi Arabia in backing the diplomatic process. Describing the MoU as a crucial step toward consolidating peace in the region, Erdogan emphasized the importance of restraint during the period before the deal is formally finalized. He reiterated Turkey’s commitment to supporting efforts that promote peace, stability, and prosperity through diplomacy and adherence to international law.
Meanwhile, Starmer highlighted the agreement as an important development in efforts to end ongoing conflict, bolster regional stability, and facilitate the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic maritime passage crucial for global energy supplies. In a statement released on Monday, the British prime minister singled out Pakistan and Qatar for their vital mediation roles, alongside other parties that contributed to advancing the negotiations.
Starmer underscored the necessity of fully implementing the terms of the MoU to ensure not only the reopening but also the sustained, permanent accessibility of the Strait of Hormuz. He also pointed to the need to finalize the details of the nuclear agreement between the US and Iran. The prime minister affirmed the UK’s readiness to support forthcoming technical talks aimed at cementing the agreement, expressing a broader commitment to working with international partners to achieve a durable and lasting peace.
The new understanding follows months of diplomatic engagement amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, with the US and Iran seeking common ground on nuclear and regional security issues. Qatar’s role, alongside Pakistan’s mediation, has been widely credited with helping bridge differences and facilitating dialogue, drawing praise from regional and international leaders.
