Turkish Ambassador to Kuwait Tuba Nur Sonmez highlighted the growing defense and security collaboration between Turkey and Kuwait, emphasizing recent advances in bilateral cooperation in the defense industries sector. Speaking at the Turkish Embassy’s Victory Day celebration, Ambassador Sonmez noted that a government-to-government defense procurement agreement signed by the two countries is beginning to yield tangible results, strengthening ties in the defense field.
She pointed to significant development in cooperation over the past several years, underscoring the importance of enhancing security and stability amid current regional and international challenges. The ambassador stated that Turkey’s defense industry has rapidly advanced over the last 15 years and that Ankara aims to share its capabilities with allied countries, reflecting the view that security is interconnected and extends beyond military concerns to include food, energy, and water security.
“Our security is linked to the security of others. If my neighbor is not secure, we will not be secure either,” she said, underscoring the broader concept of security that guides Turkey’s approach in the region.
Ambassador Sonmez reflected on her tenure in Kuwait with satisfaction, citing the defense procurement agreement as a foundational element for expanding bilateral relations. She expressed pride in contributing to the progress achieved between the two countries and voiced hope that her successor would build on this momentum.
Her remarks also recalled the strong solidarity displayed by Kuwait following the devastating earthquake in Turkey. The ambassador detailed how Kuwaiti aid—including tents, clothing, baby diapers, and food—arrived promptly at the Turkish Embassy, with aid shipments transported to affected areas by Turkish Airlines. She recounted visiting the disaster zones with Kuwaiti officials, describing the experience as deeply challenging but marked by widespread support across Kuwaiti society.
Ambassador Sonmez praised Kuwait’s hospitality and generosity throughout her posting, expressing affection for local customs such as the tradition of coffee, a significant part of Kuwaiti intangible cultural heritage. She noted that her time in Kuwait coincided with the 60th anniversary of formal diplomatic relations between the two countries, which was commemorated through various events and the release of a publication documenting their bilateral history.
While acknowledging that the official diplomatic relationship is six decades old, she highlighted that the historical and cultural ties between Turkey and Kuwait extend far longer. She expressed confidence in the potential for further growth in cooperation, stressing that existing achievements represent only a foundation for expanded partnership.
The ambassador announced that Turkey’s next envoy is scheduled to arrive in Kuwait on September 15 and expressed optimism that he would receive the same level of support and welcome she experienced. Concluding her remarks, Ambassador Sonmez described Kuwait as a second home and expressed hope that her successor would continue to strengthen the deep bonds between the two nations.
