For more than a decade, Venton Carlos Jones Jr. and Gregory Devon Scott Jr. maintained a friendship that gradually evolved into a committed partnership marked by both personal and professional milestones. Their story spans multiple cities and years, ultimately culminating in a public celebration of their union in Dallas, Texas.
Jones and Scott first connected in March 2013 through their shared membership in the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, communicating intermittently via a fraternity Facebook group. At that time, Jones was residing in Washington, D.C., while Scott was based in Minneapolis. Scott relocated to Dallas later that year for work, and Jones followed suit six years later, returning to his hometown to establish a nonprofit organization and care for family members.
Their physical proximity rekindled their connection, and through mutual friends, the two began spending more time together. Their bond deepened notably after Jones announced his candidacy for the Texas House of Representatives in December 2021—a move prompted by the vacancy created when then-Representative Jasmine Crockett aimed for a seat in the U.S. Congress. Scott was among the first to be informed of Jones’s political ambitions.
After a vigorous campaign, Jones was elected on Nov. 8, 2022, and sworn into office on Jan. 10, 2023. Throughout the 140-day 88th Texas Legislative Session between January and June 2023, Jones periodically commuted between Austin and Dallas, with Scott visiting him monthly. The two shared meals and time together during the session, nurturing what Jones described as a “relationship-esque” connection that had yet to be formally defined.
Their relationship shifted significantly following the death of Scott’s grandfather, Cordell Moore, in August 2023. Jones provided support amid Scott’s grief, deepening their bond beyond friendship. Later that month, the pair marked their first official romantic date at a Dallas steakhouse and agreed to transition into a committed partnership.
Jones, 42, serves as the representative for Texas House District 100 and leads the Southern Black Policy and Advocacy Network. He holds degrees in community health and health care administration and was previously married, divorcing in 2022. Scott, 46, works in human resources for a heating and cooling company and holds business degrees, including an MBA from Eastern Michigan University.
In April 2024, Scott moved into Jones’s Dallas home in the Oak Cliff neighborhood, close to Jones’s childhood residence. They expanded their household to include Jones’s grandmother, who moved in as she required more assistance in her later years. After a renovation completed in May 2026, the three returned to the family home where Jones and his father were raised, a residence Jones’s grandmother had occupied for over five decades.
On Jan. 14, 2025, the opening day of the 89th legislative session, Jones proposed to Scott on the floor of the Texas House of Representatives shortly after his second swearing-in. The proposal attracted attention and encouragement from colleagues and visitors. Two weeks later, Scott reciprocated with a surprise proposal during a birthday karaoke celebration in Addison, Texas.
The couple married on Aug. 29, 2026, at the Hall of State located in Fair Park, Dallas. The ceremony, presided over by Judge Adam M. Swartz, Dallas County justice of the peace, was attended by approximately 150 guests, including family. Jones noted the significance of holding the event at Fair Park, a historic site where African Americans had previously faced segregation and exclusion. Their wedding represented not only a personal milestone but also a symbolic reclamation of a space long marked by racial division.
Jones and Scott are expecting a son, Venton Gregory, due in November via surrogacy. The child will carry forward the family names as the fifth Venton and third Gregory among their relatives.
