Stephen Graham stars as Jurek Walter, a chilling serial killer, in the new psychological thriller series *Nocturne*, which unfolds over ten episodes. The story centers on Walter, who is imprisoned for life in a psychiatric hospital in Pennsylvania. Known for prolonging the deaths of his victims to inflict additional trauma on their families, Walter is also suspected of abducting and killing two children, Michael and Felicia Frost, though their bodies were never found.

The series begins when Michael unexpectedly emerges from the woods after three years, prompting Jonah Lynn, the detective who originally led the Frost case, to come out of voluntary retirement. Lynn, played by Liev Schreiber, is portrayed as a man haunted by personal tragedy, including the loss of his wife and son in an accident and the suicide of his partner. His return to the investigation raises questions about whether his grief will drive him toward recklessness or relentless determination in seeking the truth, especially regarding Felicia’s whereabouts.

Lynn’s late partner’s child, Saga, an FBI agent played by Zazie Beetz, serves as a surrogate daughter to him. As suspicions grow that Walter may have communicated with an accomplice to facilitate Michael’s release, Saga insists on going undercover by feigning mental illness to infiltrate the psychiatric facility. Inside, she becomes Walter's neighbor and navigates the dangerous psychological terrain of the institution.

Rory Culkin plays Karl, a new nurse at the hospital who becomes entangled in Walter’s manipulations. Despite warnings, Karl is drawn into the killer’s sphere of influence, carrying illicit messages between Walter and his supposed lawyer. Walter’s presence is depicted as both mesmerizing and terrifying, contributing to the series’ tense atmosphere.

While the show offers a slow-burning narrative that explores the psychological complexity of its characters and the trauma surrounding the case, some aspects—such as the broader impact of Walter's crimes on victims’ families—receive less emphasis. Nevertheless, Stephen Graham’s portrayal has been widely noted for its intensity, often cited as the series’ standout element that elevates the tension whenever he appears on screen.

*Nocturne* combines elements of suspense and psychological drama to present a layered exploration of grief, manipulation, and the pursuit of justice, set against the backdrop of a cold case reopening and an investigation into a disturbed mind.
