Iskandar Puteri City Council (MBIP) has introduced a two-hour parking limit in designated areas within its jurisdiction starting this month, responding to concerns over the prolonged occupation of parking spaces by cross-border commuters. The policy aims to address complaints that parking bays have been largely monopolized by Malaysians traveling to work in Singapore.
Datuk Hasrin Kamal, mayor of Iskandar Puteri, explained that the move was prompted by reports from local residents and businesses about the scarcity of parking options caused by workers parking for extended periods—between 14 to 16 hours daily—in public and commercial lots. These workers commute across the Johor Causeway and Second Link, with unofficial estimates indicating that approximately 400,000 to 480,000 individuals cross into Singapore each day, including around 69,000 motorcycles registered in Malaysia.
“Local businesses and market traders have experienced a decline in customers as people avoid congested commercial zones due to lack of parking,” Hasrin Kamal stated following a full board meeting at Menara MBIP in Medini Sentral.
The two-hour parking restriction applies from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, in several key locations. These include Jalan Pahlawan 1 in Taman Ungku Tun Aminah; Jalan Camar and Jalan Persisiran Perlin in Taman Perling; Jalan Indah 15/1, 15/2, and 15/3 in Taman Bukit Indah; Medan Nusa Perintis; and Taman Nusa Perintis in Gelang Patah. Parking bays subject to the limit are marked with red paint to distinguish them from unrestricted areas.
A parking fee of RM0.60 per hour applies, capped at RM1.20 for the two-hour duration. Authorities have emphasized that monthly parking passes do not exempt vehicles from the time restrictions in these zones, while daily passes are entirely invalid for these areas.
Enforcement measures include towing vehicles parked beyond the allotted time and removing obstructing or abandoned vehicles. The council has urged motorists to comply with the new regulations to ensure fair access to parking and to support local commerce.
