WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — Two people were killed and several others injured Monday morning when a school bus overturned during a multivehicle collision in central Florida, authorities said. The crash occurred shortly after 6 a.m. on a road near Winter Haven as the bus was en route to Winter Haven High School.
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd reported that an oncoming vehicle crossed the center line and struck the side of the bus near its rear wheels, which resulted in the bus flipping onto its roof. The impact also tore off a tire from the bus and forced it into a head-on collision with an oncoming Jeep, which then caught fire. One occupant of the Jeep was pronounced dead at the scene.
The school bus was carrying 39 people at the time of the crash, including 37 high school students, the bus driver, and the driver’s daughter. Among the fatalities was a 10th-grade female student.
Emergency responders transported five to seven individuals with potentially serious injuries to nearby hospitals, with one person reported to be in critical condition. Authorities have not released the names of the victims pending family notification.
Sheriff Judd described the incident as a tragic event and emphasized the ongoing investigation to determine the precise circumstances leading to the collision. No further details about the driver of the vehicle that crossed the center line were immediately available.
