Two men died and three other people were injured in a house fire on the Gold Coast late Tuesday night, authorities said. The blaze occurred at a residence on Sickle Avenue in Hope Island, where police believe the fire was deliberately started by a 38-year-old man who also died in the inferno.

Police said the fire originated inside a locked room on the ground floor of the home, where the suspected arsonist was located. The 84-year-old occupant inside the house also died after being severely burned. Investigators said two other men, including a 44-year-old who remains in critical condition at the Royal Women’s Hospital, suffered extensive burns while attempting to break through the locked door.

Two additional residents, a 59-year-old woman and a 38-year-old man, were trapped on the upper level and escaped by jumping from a balcony. The woman was hospitalized at Gold Coast University Hospital with a back injury, while the man's condition was not disclosed.

Firefighters contained the blaze around 12:20 a.m. Wednesday, fully extinguishing it by 1:45 a.m. Police confirmed that no charges will be filed as the primary suspect perished in the fire.

Detective Superintendent Chris Ahern said earlier police were called to the same address on June 24 following a dispute between the man believed to have started the fire and a former partner residing there. He noted that initial inquiries pointed to a disturbance involving two male occupants of the home.

The incident marks the second alleged domestic violence–related death on the Gold Coast in as many days. Earlier this week, a 23-year-old woman was fatally shot at Biggera Waters in an unrelated case.

“It absolutely is concerning,” Ahern said of the fire. “We don’t know the full circumstances of what happened, in terms of culpability of anyone in relation to this harm. Both these are tragic circumstances… Any violence is absolutely unacceptable and people who are aware of anything like that happening need to call it out and report it.”

Neighbors who witnessed the event described hearing screams and rushing to aid the victims. Meihana Pauling and Eli Bijl-Kakoi, living a few doors away, said they heard an older woman screaming for help and found a man trapped inside the garage.

“We heard an older lady screaming so we ran outside and she told us to get help and that her dad was inside the garage,” Bijl-Kakoi said. “So we lifted up the garage and got him out. It was a big fire, the lady was screaming.” Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fire.
