An 82-year-old man has died following a crash in the M5 East Tunnel at Arncliffe, which police believe was triggered by a medical episode. The incident occurred around 7 p.m. on Monday when the driver collided with a wall inside the tunnel. He was taken to St George Hospital in a critical condition but later succumbed to his injuries. A 79-year-old female passenger in the vehicle was unharmed.

In a separate incident on the same day, a 70-year-old woman was struck by a vehicle in Sydney’s northwest suburb of The Ponds at approximately 5:30 p.m. She was transported to hospital in critical condition and subsequently died.

Police confirmed both fatalities and noted that coronial investigations will be conducted to determine the circumstances surrounding each death.
