A 7-month-old girl died Wednesday after being struck by a stray bullet in Brooklyn, an incident that also grazed her brother. Authorities have since arrested two men in connection with the fatal shooting, which occurred in the Williamsburg neighborhood.
The infant, identified as Kaori Patterson-Moore, was in a stroller at the corner of Moore and Humboldt Streets when the shooting took place around 1:15 p.m. Police reported that shots were fired by an individual riding on the back of a moped. The same bullet that fatally struck Kaori also grazed the back of her brother. Following the shooting, Kaori's father reportedly rushed her to Woodhull Medical Center, three blocks away, where she was pronounced dead. Witnesses described the scene, with one, Bernius Maldonado, initially mistaking the gunshots for firecrackers.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated at a Wednesday news conference that at least two shots were fired towards a group of adults, two strollers, and several children gathered at the corner. According to Vincent Valcassel, a witness who had exited a nearby supermarket, he heard two men arguing approximately 15 minutes before two individuals rode a scooter northbound on Humboldt Street, traveling against traffic. A police photo released shows the passenger on the moped pivoting left and raising a handgun.
After the shooting, the moped continued against traffic for two blocks before colliding with an oncoming vehicle. The passenger, who fell from the moped with force, was transported to Brooklyn Hospital Center. Investigators at the hospital noted his clothing and appearance matched descriptions of the shooter. He was initially taken into custody for an unrelated investigation. The moped and the shooter's shoes were later recovered.
Authorities announced two arrests in the case. Amuri Greene, 21, was taken into custody on Thursday afternoon and subsequently charged with multiple counts, including murder, attempted murder, and assault. On Friday, 18-year-old Matthew Rodriguez was apprehended in Pennsylvania in connection with the shooting, with charges against him pending. Commissioner Tisch indicated that the shooting appears to be "gang motivated," though specific details were not provided.
The incident drew swift condemnation from city officials. Mayor Zohran Mamdani commented on Wednesday near the scene, remarking that "A life that had barely begun was taken in an instant." A vigil for Kaori Patterson-Moore is scheduled for Saturday at noon at the site of the shooting, with family members, clergy, and New York Attorney General Letitia James expected to attend.
