A police pursuit that began early Friday morning in Newtown ended in a residential laneway in Alexandria, where two men remain at large following a dramatic escape. The incident unfolded around 5:30 a.m. after police attempted to stop a white Audi on New Canterbury Road, Petersham. The vehicle was reportedly linked to a break and enter incident in nearby Summer Hill and had been reported stolen from Newtown on May 6.

Security camera footage from the laneway captured the moment the Audi came to a halt and its three occupants fled on foot. Officers quickly responded, arresting a 29-year-old woman from Marrickville while conducting an extensive search for the two men who fled the scene.

The woman has been charged with being carried in a conveyance taken without the owner’s consent and failing to disclose the identities of the driver and other passengers. Police remained in the neighborhood for several hours, canvassing homes, backyards, and garages, and speaking to residents in an effort to locate the fugitives.

Local university students Arjun Benipal and Gabriel Kidston, both 23, recounted the chaotic scene as officers pursued the men. Benipal described hearing loud noises on his roof, moments before the police deployed flashlights and called out warnings. “We heard talk of a male but we never saw him,” Kidston said, noting officers searched their garage briefly before departing.

The search for the two men continues, with police maintaining a presence in the area as investigations proceed. No further details about the suspects have been released.
