Authorities have identified two men involved in a boating accident off the coast of Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts, that occurred over the weekend, while a third remains missing. Carl Potter, 67, of Beverly, was confirmed dead following the crash on Saturday afternoon, according to a statement from the Essex District Attorney’s office. James Wolcott, 37, of Hamilton, has not been found, and the Coast Guard suspended its search for him on Sunday evening.

The incident took place near Singing Beach shortly before 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, when the Coast Guard received a report of a vessel making slow circles with no visible occupants on board. Authorities found Potter and a third man, aged 65, in the water and transported them to nearby hospitals. Potter later succumbed to his injuries. Officials have withheld the name and medical condition of the hospitalized man to protect his privacy.

A dog was also discovered alive on the boat and subsequently returned to its owners.

The Coast Guard, assisted by state environmental police and divers, conducted extensive search operations on Saturday and Sunday. Aircraft flew over the area, and side-scan sonar was deployed to aid in locating Wolcott, but efforts were called off Sunday night.

Charlie's Wolcott, father of the missing man, described the event as "a terrible accident" marked by shock and sorrow.

Capt. Jamie Frederick, commander of Sector Boston, expressed condolences to the families affected and thanked the local, state, and federal agencies that participated in the search.

The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation. Requests for an update from the Coast Guard on Monday were not immediately answered.
