Two large fireballs, suspected to be meteors, were observed streaking across New Zealand’s skies over the past week, captivating residents and causing noticeable reactions among animals. The latest of these occurred shortly after 10:20 p.m. on Tuesday in the North Island, following a similar event reported on Sunday evening over the South Island.
Videos recorded by dashcams, security cameras, and specialized meteor detection cameras captured bright flashes lighting up the night sky. Numerous witnesses took to social media to recount their experiences, describing loud sonic booms and vivid displays. One observer described the object as “huge” with an orange ball and a purple tail trailing black soot, while another noted their livestock became agitated during the event.
Steve Wyn-Harris, director of Fireballs Aotearoa—a group comprising geologists, astronomers, and citizen scientists dedicated to tracking meteors and meteorites—was among those who witnessed Tuesday’s occurrence from Hawke’s Bay. Initially mistaking the flash for lightning, he soon received multiple reports confirming the sighting. Wyn-Harris highlighted the significance of the accompanying sonic boom, indicating the meteor penetrated relatively close to the Earth’s surface.
Fireballs Aotearoa has urged New Zealanders to remain vigilant for potential meteorite fragments, encouraging them to report any unusual black stones found in outdoor areas. Historically, only 10 meteorites have been officially recovered in New Zealand over the past 150 years, a scarcity attributed to the country’s sparse population, challenging landscapes, and limited systems for triangulating meteor landings.
In recent years, however, detection capabilities have improved significantly. The organization now operates around 200 cameras across the country, augmented by a growing number of security cameras, enhancing the ability to capture and locate such events. Wyn-Harris noted that New Zealand’s comprehensive coverage places it among the leading regions worldwide for observing meteor activity.
