Ty Dieffenbach’s journey to becoming UCLA’s starting quarterback is a testament to perseverance amid personal and athletic challenges. The quarterback’s rise gained national attention last week after he stepped into the starting role for the Bruins following an injury to the team’s previous starter.

Dieffenbach’s football story began in high school at Agoura, where he originally played wide receiver before switching to quarterback as a sophomore. His decision came amid a difficult period off the field, as his mother battled breast cancer. His high school coach, Dustin Croick, recalled how football became an important outlet for Dieffenbach during that time, helping him cope with the emotional strain. The two worked closely, even via Zoom, dedicating extra hours to mastering quarterback skills and team schemes.

Despite a breakout sophomore season in which Dieffenbach led Agoura to a 7-3 record and set a new school single-season touchdown passing record previously held by Croick, the subsequent season proved more challenging. The team experienced a steep decline, finishing 1-9, and Dieffenbach suffered a knee injury that sidelined him for the remainder of the year. Nevertheless, his commitment to the program remained steadfast.

That dedication paid off when Dieffenbach received a late collegiate offer from the University of Pittsburgh, marking a rare recruitment milestone as one of the first players from Agoura to earn a Power Five conference opportunity in over a decade. His time at Pittsburgh, however, saw limited playing opportunities and a position change request from a new offensive coordinator that prompted him to seek a transfer.

Dieffenbach’s next stop was Cal Poly, where injuries continued to limit his impact during a 4-8 season coinciding with coaching transitions. Ultimately, he transferred to UCLA, where he gradually earned the confidence of coaches and teammates alike. When an injury sidelined UCLA’s starting quarterback, Dieffenbach stepped in, leading the Bruins to a notable victory at Oregon—a key factor in securing the starting role for the subsequent game against Wisconsin.

Coach Croick emphasized Dieffenbach’s resilience, noting that despite setbacks like injuries and sporadic playing time, the quarterback maintained self-belief and work ethic that propelled him to his current opportunities. As Dieffenbach continues to develop within UCLA’s program, his story exemplifies the determination required to overcome adversity both on and off the field.
