Bryan Johnson, a Silicon Valley multimillionaire diagnosed with an incurable autoimmune disease, has announced plans to clone himself in an effort to harvest healthy organs and potentially reverse the effects of aging. Johnson, 48, revealed that he is using cutting-edge stem cell technology to create a cloned version of himself, with the hope of rebuilding his body and repairing damage caused by autoimmune gastritis, a condition that attacks stomach-lining cells and can lead to anemia and increased cancer risk.
Johnson, who currently resides in Venice, California, has been pursuing unconventional anti-aging methods, including receiving blood transfusions from his teenage son. He credits these transfusions with significant health improvements, such as heart function comparable to a 37-year-old, lung capacity similar to that of an 18-year-old, and the gum health of a 17-year-old. However, his latest venture represents a more radical approach.
The process involves extracting cells from Johnson’s blood and reprogramming them to an embryonic, or pluripotent, state using a technique developed by Japanese stem cell researcher and Nobel laureate Shinya Yamanaka. These reprogrammed cells are free from "epigenetic" errors—damage accumulated as a person ages—and can potentially be developed into any cell type within the body. Johnson described this approach as a means to “rebuild” his body on an organ-by-organ basis, replacing damaged cells with healthy ones derived from the cloned cells.
Johnson framed the project as a pioneering example of how advances in biotechnology could provide new treatments for otherwise incurable diseases. He acknowledged that the concept might evoke discomfort or concerns about ethical and societal implications but argued it represents the “inevitable future of health.” According to him, similar stem cell-based clinical trials are already underway to address conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, heart failure, and vision impairment.
The cloned cells, being genetically identical to Johnson, should theoretically be accepted by his immune system, reducing the risk of organ rejection. This strategy aligns with ongoing scientific research into regenerative medicine and personalized cell therapies.
Johnson attributes his autoimmune condition to lifestyle choices made earlier in life, specifically a diet high in sugar and fast food, and sees his diagnosis as an opportunity to explore new frontiers in health restoration.
