A drone strike on Sunday targeted an electrical generator located outside the inner perimeter of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the Al-Dhafra region of the United Arab Emirates, authorities reported. The attack caused a fire at the facility, which was promptly contained by emergency response teams, according to an official statement from Abu Dhabi’s media office.

No injuries were reported, and officials confirmed that the incident did not affect radiological safety levels at the plant. The Barakah facility, which comprises four reactors, is the first operational nuclear power plant in the Arabian Peninsula and was developed through cooperation between the UAE and South Korea. Construction of the $20 billion project was completed ahead of its initial operation in 2020.

The strike marks the first time Barakah has been directly targeted since the ongoing Iran war escalated in the region. Situated deep within the western desert of Abu Dhabi, near the Saudi border, the plant’s location underscores the complex security challenges facing critical infrastructure amid increased regional tensions.

No group has claimed responsibility for the drone attack. The UAE government has not publicly attributed blame and has maintained a cautious diplomatic approach in the wake of the incident. The Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which oversees global nuclear safety, did not immediately comment on the situation.

Observers note that attacks on nuclear power facilities are becoming more prevalent in conflict zones, a trend that intensified notably after the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. On the other side of the current Iran conflict, Iran has reported multiple hostile actions against its Bushehr nuclear power plant, operated with Russian technical assistance. These prior events, however, reportedly caused no structural damage or radiological release.

The drone strike at Barakah highlights the growing vulnerability of nuclear energy infrastructure in geopolitically volatile areas and raises concerns among international observers about the potential risks to regional and global security. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as investigations into the incident are ongoing.
