The United Arab Emirates (UAE) passport has surged to the second most powerful travel document worldwide, marking a remarkable advancement in international mobility over the past two decades. According to the latest Henley Passport Index released in July 2026, Emirati citizens now have visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 188 destinations, placing the UAE alongside Japan and South Korea in second place, just behind Singapore, which holds the top spot with access to 192 countries.
This rise in passport strength represents the largest improvement recorded in the 20-year history of the Henley Passport Index. Since 2006, the UAE has added 153 visa-free destinations, climbing from a mid-level rank when it offered access to just 35 countries. The index, which bases its rankings on exclusive International Air Transport Association (IATA) Timatic data, reflects how travel freedom is closely linked to a nation’s global influence, diplomatic ties, and economic partnerships.
Dr. Christian H. Kaelin, Chairman of Henley & Partners and creator of the index, noted that a powerful passport signals strong geopolitical capital. “The strongest passports belong to nations that other countries want as partners – for trade, investment, security, or cooperation,” he said. The UAE’s ascent illustrates the impact of sustained diplomacy and international collaboration in expanding a country’s global reach.
Beyond facilitating easier international travel, the UAE’s enhanced passport ranking underscores its expanding role as a hub for business, investment, and talent attraction. The country’s ability to foster international partnerships has contributed significantly to its growing global stature. The report highlights that high levels of travel freedom not only benefit Emirati citizens but also enhance the UAE’s appeal to global investors and enterprises.
Additionally, the Henley & Partners report observes a surge in interest among UAE residents in global mobility options, with inquiries regarding residence and citizenship-by-investment programs rising by 41 percent since the escalation of conflict in the Gulf region in February.
