The United Arab Emirates has expanded its renewable energy capacity more than 63-fold over the past decade, reaching over 8.2 gigawatts in 2025, up from 129 megawatts in 2015, according to Sharif Al Olama, Undersecretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure.
Al Olama highlighted the country’s significant advancements across the energy sector, including the expansion of clean energy sources, the development of the national electricity system, the strengthening of grid interconnections, and the deployment of metered technologies and data tools to enhance grid management and preparedness. He attributed this progress to a coordinated national vision aimed at establishing a secure and sustainable energy system that can meet future demand through collaboration among federal and local authorities, state-owned companies, and the private sector.
Clean energy accounted for 32.4 percent of electricity generation in 2025, with the UAE targeting a 35 percent share by 2031. Electricity generated from clean sources reached more than 6.24 billion kilowatt-hours last year, while installed clean energy capacity across the country totaled 13,805 megawatts. This capacity includes contributions from nuclear power, photovoltaic solar panels, concentrated solar power, wind energy, and waste-to-energy technologies.
Total electricity generation in the UAE rose to 192,735 gigawatt-hours in 2025, exceeding the country’s consumption of 174,524 gigawatt-hours. Al Olama noted that these figures illustrate ongoing efforts to diversify the energy mix and improve the readiness and resilience of the national electricity grid.
The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure continues to collaborate with its partners to develop the electricity market, enhance grid interconnection projects, further expand clean energy capacity, and implement advanced technologies for grid monitoring and resource management.
