The demand for ready-to-eat and ready-to-cook meals in the United Arab Emirates is experiencing significant growth, driven by shifting lifestyle patterns, an increasing number of working professionals, and a preference for convenient yet nutritious food options. In response, major supermarket chains and cooperatives are expanding their product ranges and enhancing live kitchen offerings to better meet consumer expectations.

Mohammed Al Hashimi, CEO of Union Coop, cited this trend as one of the fastest-growing sectors in the UAE retail landscape, particularly in Dubai, where a diverse population presents varied culinary needs. He explained that the rising demand is not solely motivated by convenience but also by consumers’ desire for quality and freshness in their meals.

Retailers are adapting by increasing the shelf space allocated to pre-packaged ready meals and investing significantly in in-store dining experiences, including live food preparation stations. Al Hashimi emphasized that Union Coop’s expansion strategy involves continuous assessment of shopper preferences and market dynamics, allowing the cooperative to scale up live kitchen sections and ready meal areas in both existing and new branches.

He noted that the growth strategy is tailored to the specific demand and demographic characteristics of each location to ensure offerings remain relevant and appealing. This development reflects a broader shift in the UAE’s food retail sector, as consumer preferences evolve toward meal solutions that balance speed, quality, and variety.
