Highland cow-themed products are experiencing a surge in popularity across the UK, appearing in a wide array of homeware and decor items from major retailers. The Scottish bovine motif has transitioned from rural fields to living rooms, kitchens, and retail shelves, capturing the interest of consumers seeking distinctive and cozy touches for their homes.
Retailer Next has embraced the trend extensively, offering nearly 600 highland cow-related products under its character “Hamish the Highland Cow.” Items range from mugs, kettles, and chopping boards to pyjamas and decorative hooks. Other retailers have also expanded their offerings, with stores such as Asda and Wilko featuring ornaments, cleaning brushes, and even dog toys adorned with highland cow imagery.
The demand for such themed products is evident. A home and garden chain reported an 88% increase in searches for highland cow items in August, attributing the rise to consumers’ desire for decor that feels personal and evokes a connection to British heritage and countryside living. The highland cow’s instantly recognizable appearance is seen as bringing warmth and calm to interior spaces.
Kate Hewitt, a DIY content creator and former contestant on Interior Design Masters, observes that the highland cow trend aligns with a broader movement toward cozy, vintage-inspired, country-style interiors. She suggests that the appeal lies partly in the animal’s distinctive and “cute” appearance, which stands out to those outside Scotland where the cattle are less common. Hewitt notes the brown and orange tones of highland cow imagery complement the autumnal color palettes often favored in home decorating during recent years.
While Hewitt personally prefers more understated decor, she acknowledges the aesthetic appeal of certain highland cow prints and sees their potential as accent pieces rather than dominant themes. She also shares how the trend resonates differently across generations, highlighting that her mother has embraced the style enthusiastically.
Among shoppers, the highland cow motif appears to inspire a range of reactions, from enthusiastic fandom to more reserved appreciation via family members or friends. The widespread presence of the design—seen in everything from kitchen accessories to seasonal decorations—suggests it may be a staple choice for gift giving and holiday shopping in the near future.
