The University of Doha for Science and Technology (UDST) recently awarded certificates to 12 participants who completed an instructor training course based on the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) and the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Model Course 6.09. The certification ceremony took place at UDST’s Maritime Simulation and Training Centre (MSTC).

Graduates of the programme came from a range of public and private maritime organisations across Qatar. The STCW Instructor Training Course is designed to provide maritime professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively plan, deliver, and assess competency-based training in line with international STCW requirements. The curriculum covers instructional techniques, teaching methodologies, and practical assessment approaches to ensure instructors can uphold high standards in maritime education and safety.

Alessio Redina, director of MSTC, emphasised UDST’s commitment to fostering skilled professionals to support Qatar’s strategic sectors. He noted that the training, aligned with IMO standards, prepares maritime specialists to become instructors capable of transferring essential knowledge, strengthening workforce capabilities, and promoting a culture of safety and operational excellence in the maritime industry.

Redina also highlighted the importance of collaboration with national partners to build sustainable capacity within Qatar’s maritime sector. The MSTC at UDST is recognised as one of the leading institutions in the region for maritime education, providing internationally accredited programmes and advanced simulation technologies to equip maritime professionals with the skills needed to address the evolving challenges of the industry.

The completion of this course contributes to Qatar’s broader efforts to enhance competitiveness and safety in its maritime domain by developing qualified instructors who can deliver effective training and support continuous professional development in the sector.
