The University of Doha for Science and Technology (UDST) has been honoured with the MENASA NASPA Silver Award for Innovative Practices in recognition of its Student Mental Health Ambassadors (SMHA) programme. The accolade, presented by NASPA MENASA—the regional network covering the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia—acknowledges UDST’s efforts in advancing student mental health and fostering an inclusive and psychologically safe campus environment.

The Student Mental Health Ambassadors initiative represents a collaborative effort between student volunteers and the university’s Student Counselling and Accessibility Services. Through peer-led engagement, the programme promotes mental health awareness and encourages students to seek support, highlighting a commitment to strengthening campus support systems. Key activities within the programme include the Wellbeing Café, a designated space offering students a welcoming setting to connect, engage in wellness-focused activities, and build resilience. Additionally, the ambassadors have organised multiple awareness campaigns and peer-led workshops that aim to reduce mental health stigma and facilitate open dialogue among the student body.

Nicole Penney, manager of Student Counselling and Accessibility Services at UDST, expressed pride in the recognition, describing the award as a milestone that underscores the positive impact of the SMHA programme. Penney emphasised the importance of creating a supportive and inclusive atmosphere where student well-being is at the forefront, and credited the ambassadors’ leadership and dedication for fostering meaningful conversations and a stronger sense of community across campus.

By earning the MENASA NASPA Silver Award, UDST’s Student Mental Health Ambassadors programme is positioned as a leading example of innovative peer support within higher education institutions across the MENASA region, reflecting the university’s broader commitment to student welfare and progressive mental health initiatives.
