Wildfires in the Costa Almeria region of southern Spain have caused significant destruction and loss of life, claiming at least a dozen fatalities, including four British expatriates. Authorities have reported that 23 individuals remain missing as efforts continue to control the blaze, which has consumed approximately 16,300 acres of land near the town of Bedar.
The fires, fueled by strong winds, spread rapidly, catching residents and visitors off guard. Former West Yorkshire firefighter Richard Walker, who was at his home near Bedar when the fire began, described the situation as unprecedented in his experience. “I worked as a fireman for 15 years and I’ve been to moorland fires, but I’ve never seen anything this ferocious,” he said. Walker recounted how he received warnings from a friend about the advancing fire and quickly urged his girlfriend to pack an emergency bag. He also went to alert neighbors, including two teenage girls, urging them to evacuate immediately.
Walker described the escape as dangerous, with some roads becoming impassable just minutes after they left. “My friend drove down after me. I think he may have been the last car out,” he said, likening the experience to “Evel Knievel driving through the flaming wall,” as the fire engulfed both sides of the road.
Another British expatriate, Jackie Handscombe, who has lived near Bedar for a decade, also recounted her narrow escape. She said she initially noticed smoke on Thursday evening and soon realized the severity of the situation. “It was like a red wall of flames, it was frightening. It looked angry. I just wanted to get out,” she said. She described the area as scorched and noted that she had never seen anything like it in her ten years in the region.
Local authorities, including the Guardia Civil, have closed off all access to the mountainous areas affected by the fires to protect residents and aid firefighting efforts. A fleet of heavy-lift helicopters has been deployed to drop water on smouldering and active fire zones in an effort to contain the blaze.
Many residents and holidaymakers have been evacuated from their homes and properties. Paul Thompson, another Briton affected, fled his holiday villa after seeing the flames over a ridge and expressed uncertainty about the condition of his property, noting a neighbor’s home nearby was destroyed.
Officials have warned that the fatality count may rise as rescue teams continue to search for missing persons amid difficult conditions. The fast-moving fires have caused widespread damage to homes and countryside, prompting an ongoing emergency response in the region.
