The United Kingdom has entered its third heatwave of 2026, with temperatures expected to reach up to 35 degrees Celsius in some regions. Currently, only the South East has experienced the necessary threshold of three consecutive days with temperatures exceeding 28 degrees Celsius to officially qualify for a heatwave. Amber heat alerts have been issued for the Midlands and Southern England, in effect until Sunday.
The Met Office noted that this heatwave is anticipated to be less humid and feature lower peak temperatures compared to the June heatwave. Deputy chief forecaster Steven Keates indicated that while parts of the UK are now entering heatwave conditions, this third event is not expected to break previous records. Unlike the earlier heatwaves in May and June, night-time temperatures should be cooler, reducing the likelihood of disrupted sleep experienced by nearly two-thirds of the population during June’s heatwave, according to a recent poll.
The heightened temperatures have prompted renewed warnings concerning water safety. Following a spate of at least 29 drowning deaths, many involving children, during the earlier heatwaves, a campaign has been launched to raise public awareness. The initiative urges parents and caregivers to ensure children avoid risky behavior around open water bodies. Ross Macleod, water safety manager at the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), emphasized the importance of conversations about the hazards of swimming in natural water environments, describing such discussions as potentially lifesaving.
Authorities continue to advise the public to stay vigilant as warmer weather persists, balancing enjoyment of the summer heat with necessary precautions to prevent accidents.
