The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has announced an opening for the position of Director of Public Health Microbiology. The role involves leading the agency’s microbiology and laboratory-based infectious disease science, with a focus on ensuring the delivery of high-quality diagnostics and disease surveillance across the United Kingdom.

The Director will oversee the Public Health Microbiology network, which provides essential services for managing infectious disease threats. Responsibilities include maintaining day-to-day laboratory operations and developing surge capacity to respond effectively to public health incidents. This leadership position offers the opportunity to influence the strategic direction of the UKHSA’s scientific efforts in monitoring and controlling infections.

The role will be based on a hybrid working model, with the successful candidate operating from one of UKHSA’s primary sites in Birmingham, Leeds, Liverpool, or London, or alternatively at one of the agency’s scientific campuses. Regular travel to London and Porton Down is also expected as part of the job requirements.

The UKHSA is tasked with protecting the public from a wide range of health threats, including infectious diseases, chemical and radiation hazards, and environmental risks exacerbated by climate change. The Director of Public Health Microbiology will play a pivotal role in supporting these objectives by strengthening laboratory science infrastructure and response capabilities.

Applications for the position must be submitted by July 16 through the UKHSA’s official recruitment portal. The agency describes the role as both high-profile and demanding, highlighting its significance within the broader public health framework in the UK.
