The United Kingdom is bracing for an intense heatwave over the upcoming bank holiday weekend, with temperatures expected to reach a record-breaking 33 degrees Celsius in parts of southern England and the Midlands. The Met Office has described the forecast as an “exceptional” period of sunshine that could exceed previous May and spring temperature highs by Monday.
Deputy chief forecaster Steve Kocher indicated that temperatures will steadily rise throughout the weekend, with southern regions likely to experience around 30C on Saturday, increasing to 32C on Sunday, and peaking at 33C on Monday. This surge in heat is anticipated to place the country well above the temperature levels forecast across much of mainland Europe.
The anticipated warm spell is already driving increased consumer activity, particularly in retail sectors catering to outdoor and leisure pursuits. Supermarket chain Aldi has reported expectations of selling over one million sausages and nearly one million burgers during the period. Additionally, the retailer forecasts sales exceeding two million beer packs and enough prosecco to fill approximately 1.3 million glasses. Marks & Spencer anticipates selling more than 350,000 canned beverages between Friday and Monday.
Travel patterns are also shifting due to the forecast, with a noticeable rise in domestic tourism. EasyHotel has observed a nearly 50% increase in bookings at its UK locations during the May half-term compared to the previous year, as many travelers opt for sun-soaked breaks within the country rather than navigating busy foreign airports.
Beyond retail and travel sectors, some social analysts suggest that the combination of soaring temperatures and an extended weekend may influence social behaviors. The affairs website Illicit Encounters has projected a potential surge in new user registrations, attributing this to a so-called “cheatwave” driven by increased restlessness and lowered inhibitions brought on by sun exposure and alcohol consumption.
As the UK prepares for this notable stretch of warm weather, residents are expected to engage in various outdoor activities and celebrations, making the most of the unseasonably high temperatures.
