The UK experienced its warmest summer on record in 2026, according to provisional data released this week by the Met Office. The average temperatures surpassed all previous measurements dating back to 1884, with central England registering its highest summer temperatures since records began in 1659. This year’s heat eclipsed the notable summer of 1976, which now ranks only as the seventh hottest on record in the UK.
Despite widespread hosepipe bans and persistent drought conditions, this summer was comparatively less dry than some past years. For England and Wales, it was the tenth driest summer since 1931. Scotland's northern and western regions saw average or above-average rainfall, contributing to cloudier conditions compared to other parts of the UK.
The intense heat throughout much of Britain was part of a larger pattern spanning across the continent. Much of Europe experienced severe heatwaves accompanied by prolonged dry spells, which contributed to numerous wildfires. High sea temperatures also resulted in marine heatwaves, particularly affecting the Mediterranean Sea. Forecasts for this week included daytime highs of 35°C in Rome and 33°C in Madrid. France also recorded new September temperature highs, including a peak of 35.9°C at Montfort in the southwest.
Experts warn that the elevated sea temperatures in the Mediterranean could fuel more severe storm activity in the coming autumn months. Temperatures have been elevated beyond Europe as well, extending to the Arctic and parts of the Americas. Arctic regions such as Shologonsky in Siberia reached 27.8°C, while Clyde River in Nunavut, Canada, recorded 15.4°C. Other parts of the world also set records this month, including Lima, Peru, which noted its warmest September night with a minimum temperature of 20.4°C.
The documented rise in global temperatures aligns with the prevailing scientific consensus attributing climate change largely to human activities, specifically pollution from fossil fuel use. While skepticism remains among some groups, the growing body of evidence demonstrating accelerating climate shifts has left few credible dissenting explanations. The central challenge moving forward is determining effective measures to reduce emissions and manage future temperature increases.
