Ukraine conducted a large-scale drone attack targeting Moscow and Russian maritime assets on July 7, continuing its efforts to assert control over the airspace in the ongoing conflict with Russia. More than 400 drones were deployed, including 36 aimed directly at the Russian capital. In addition to the strikes on Moscow, Ukrainian forces reported the destruction of eight oil tankers linked to what they describe as Vladimir Putin’s shadow fleet, along with a ferry and a cargo ship that were transporting fuel to Russian-occupied Crimea.

President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the strategic importance of air superiority in the conflict, stating that victory will go to the side that demonstrates greater intelligence and adaptability. Zelensky also reiterated his call for increased shipments of US-made Patriot missile systems, which are designed to intercept ballistic missiles, to reinforce Ukraine’s defenses against Russian missile attacks.

The drone offensive followed a recent missile strike by Russian forces on Kyiv that reportedly killed 19 civilians. In response, many of the Ukrainian drones were intercepted and shot down by Russian air defenses. However, analysts note that the debris and damage caused by these attacks have the potential to heighten domestic opposition within Russia to the ongoing war, especially as Ukraine targets critical infrastructure such as oil refineries and supply lines.

Robert Brovdi, a commander of Ukraine’s frontline drone units, conveyed confidence in the operation’s impact, stating that Ukrainian forces will maintain their stance and predicted that Moscow could eventually fall under pressure from these sustained aerial assaults.

While Russian authorities have not publicly confirmed the full extent of losses at sea or in Moscow, the attack reflects a shift in tactics by Ukraine toward focusing on disrupting Russian logistics and supply routes, particularly those supporting the annexed Crimean peninsula.

The escalation underscores the evolving nature of the conflict as both sides adjust their military strategies, with Ukraine increasingly leveraging unmanned aerial vehicles to challenge Russian air and maritime assets.
