A spent nuclear fuel storage facility near Chernobyl sustained damage after being struck by a Russian drone, Ukrainian authorities reported. The attack occurred on Wednesday and targeted the reception area of the highly secured facility, causing structural damage and scattering debris across the site.
Ukraine’s state nuclear company Energoatom confirmed the drone strike, noting that a fire was ignited but quickly brought under control. Officials emphasized that there were no casualties and that radiation levels remained stable and within safe limits following the incident.
The Ukrainian security service has launched a criminal probe into the attack, classifying it as a war crime. Investigators recovered fragments of a Russian Geran-2 long-range drone at the scene, which they identified as the weapon used in the strike.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha condemned the attack, stating that it warranted global denunciation due to the potential risks involved with targeting nuclear sites. The incident highlights ongoing concerns over the safety of nuclear infrastructure amid the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
