Ukrainian forces struck a key industrial facility in the Russian city of Volgograd on June 27, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced, marking an intensification of Kyiv’s long-range aerial campaign against Russian military and energy infrastructure. The attack is part of a broader strategy aimed at undermining Moscow’s war capabilities and increasing pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin to negotiate an end to the conflict, now in its fifth year.
Zelenskyy reported that FP-5 Flamingo missiles targeted the Titan-Barrikady plant, a major complex in southwestern Russia involved in the production of artillery systems and specialized military equipment. According to Ukraine’s General Staff, the facility manufactures components for missile systems, including self-propelled launchers and transport-loading vehicles for the Iskander-M missile system, which Russian forces have repeatedly used against Ukrainian cities.
Volgograd Governor Andrei Bocharov confirmed that a business in the Krasnooktyabrsky district was hit, resulting in injuries to 10 people who were hospitalized. He acknowledged damage to production facilities but did not specify the company affected.
In addition to the Volgograd strike, Ukraine’s state security service reported a second attack this month on an oil pumping station in the Vladimir region, a critical supplier of fuel to Moscow.
These assaults occurred a day after Kyiv conducted one of its largest drone campaigns since the Kremlin launched its full-scale invasion over four years ago. Russian Defense Ministry officials stated that the nocturnal attack targeted at least a dozen Russian regions, as well as Russian-held Crimea and nearby seas. Russian air defenses reportedly intercepted 660 Ukrainian drones during the operation.
Zelenskyy had previously indicated he ordered a “40-day influence operation” to force Russia to end the war after diplomatic efforts led by the United States and others failed to produce significant progress. The intensified strikes appear to align with this directive.
Meanwhile, in Ukraine’s northeastern Sumy region, a Russian drone strike on a residential area resulted in the death of a 66-year-old man, according to regional official Oleh Hryhorov.
In Moscow, Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported that 47 Ukrainian drones were shot down while approaching the capital. He did not report any casualties or damage from the attempted incursion. The ongoing drone assaults and missile strikes underscore the escalating nature of the conflict as both sides seek to gain leverage on and off the battlefield.
