Ukraine’s First Lady, Olena Zelenska, has called on the international community not to overlook the human cost of the conflict after a tragic Russian drone strike killed a one-year-old child in Kharkiv. The attack, which occurred on Monday at a park in the eastern Ukrainian city, claimed the lives of Angelina Mariukhna, who was seated in her pushchair, her mother Inna, a 28-year-old primary school teacher, and four others, including an 11-year-old girl. More than a dozen additional individuals sustained injuries during the strike.

In a social media post, Zelenska shared a distressing image of Angelina’s lifeless body slumped in her stroller, highlighting the vulnerability of civilians who seek moments of respite outdoors after spending prolonged periods sheltering from hostilities. “Parents seize every opportunity to let their children breathe fresh air after spending so much time in shelters,” she stated, emphasizing that the attack exploited such moments of relief.

The image rapidly circulated online, drawing widespread attention to the impact of the ongoing conflict on Ukrainian civilians. The strike coincided with controversial remarks made by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who suggested that Russia had “been fine on Ukraine” and “haven’t been doing much” in relation to the war. These comments came amid scrutiny around the United States for allegedly limiting Ukraine’s access to intelligence and satellite technology, as well as continuing to purchase Russian diesel and easing sanctions.

Trump’s statements sparked global condemnation, further complicated by the actions of his special envoy, Steve Witkoff. During talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg, Witkoff expressed gratitude for a diesel procurement deal, describing Putin, whose forces invaded Ukraine in February 2022, in unexpectedly positive terms. Witkoff also referred to Putin as a “humanitarian” for facilitating the release of Stephen Hubbard, a 74-year-old U.S. prisoner whom Russia accused of fighting for Ukraine and who was recently freed.

These developments underscore ongoing tensions in the international response to the war in Ukraine, with civilian casualties continuing to punctuate the conflict and diplomatic interactions revealing divergent positions among global actors.
