Ukraine’s access to the Starlink and Starshield satellite communication systems has been restored to pre-disruption speeds, Ukrainian officials confirmed over the weekend. President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on social media that the restoration began overnight and by Saturday morning speeds had returned to levels supporting frontline logistics and defense efforts, particularly against Russian drone attacks.

The Starlink network, operated by SpaceX, has been a critical element in Ukraine’s military communications and drone operations throughout the ongoing conflict with Russia. The military-grade Starshield system, a specialized version of Starlink, serves as the backbone for many Ukrainian defense activities. For more than a week, restrictions on Starshield caused significant operational disruptions, with Ukrainian commanders reporting lost drones and hampered missions. The reduced connectivity raised concerns within Kyiv’s government and military, as well as heightened tensions with Washington.

Ukraine’s Defence Minister, Yevgeniy Khmara, described the renewed connection as “stable” with speeds exceeding 400 kilometers per hour, emphasizing the importance of the network for frontline logistics, drone operations, and communications. He attributed the improvement to Zelensky’s firm stance on the matter, suggesting diplomatic pressure may have influenced the resolution.

The episode transpired amid a broader diplomatic context marked by recent developments aimed at de-escalating hostilities. Russia agreed to resume three-way negotiations with the United States and Ukraine next month, and a localized ceasefire was brokered around Oleshky, a Russian-occupied town in southern Ukraine’s Kherson region.

Questions remain about who authorized the Starlink restrictions. Various U.S. officials have provided conflicting statements: Vice President JD Vance hinted at coordination with Elon Musk, SpaceX’s CEO, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth denied any White House involvement. Former President Donald Trump, now a private citizen, stated that he did not order the throttling and suggested Musk should not be blamed. Trump also said he would contact Musk to address any ongoing issues with the communication system.

Musk himself has asserted that any disruptions originated from the U.S. government rather than SpaceX, a claim that has complicated the narrative. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s President Zelensky had accused the United States of indirectly aiding Russia by failing to provide timely warnings about missile strikes and restricting Starlink’s functionality, which impeded Ukraine’s military response capabilities.

As Starlink’s service returns to full capacity, Ukrainian officials express hope that stable communications will enhance their defensive measures amid ongoing conflict with Russian forces. The restoration of this critical technology underscores its strategic role in the conflict and the complex intersection of military operations and international diplomacy.
