At least 16 people were killed on Saturday amid intensified attacks by Ukrainian and Russian forces in the fifth summer of the ongoing conflict, as diplomatic efforts remain stalled. The casualties occurred in areas including Russian-occupied Ukraine, northeastern Ukraine, and Russian border villages.
Ukrainian drone strikes targeted locations deep inside Russia, marking a significant escalation in the scope of attacks. Among the targets were an oil refinery in the Tyumen region of Siberia and a factory in Kirov, located hundreds of kilometers east of Moscow. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the strike on the Kirov facility, which supplies components used by Russia in its military operations, as a deliberate effort to hinder Moscow’s war capacity. The factory strike followed a previous attack the day before that killed five individuals. Kirov Governor Alexander Sokolov declared three days of mourning in the region, referring to the victims as “heroes of the labour front” and asserting that the incident would strengthen internal unity against what he called “the collective West.”
In the Urals city of Yekaterinburg, one of Russia’s largest urban centers near Siberia, Ukrainian drones also conducted strikes earlier this week. The Russian online retail company Wildberries announced the evacuation of its staff and a suspension of operations at its logistics facility in response to the attacks. The company reported no damage to the site.
On the Ukrainian front and in Russian-occupied territories, the situation remains volatile. Russian-installed authorities in the occupied Zaporizhzhia region said a Ukrainian strike in the Azov Sea village of Kyrylivka killed eight people, including two children, and injured 14 more. Yevgeny Balitsky, the Moscow-appointed head of the region, described the targeted locations as “tourist camps.” Kyiv has not issued an official response regarding the strike. Ukrainian forces have recently increased military activity in the Azov Sea, focusing on Russian maritime assets.
Meanwhile, Kyiv reported that a Russian drone raid on a Nova Poshta private courier service facility in Sumy, northeastern Ukraine, resulted in the deaths of three drivers. Zelensky characterized the attack as a “double-tap” strike, implying multiple waves targeting the same area. Additionally, two people were reported killed in southern Ukraine, with Moscow acknowledging fatalities in border villages and the occupied Kherson region.
Russian officials have acknowledged the frequency and reach of these drone incursions. Alexander Moor, governor of the Tyumen region, confirmed that a Ukrainian drone caused a fire at the oil refinery site. Moscow claimed over 300 drones have entered Russian territory, including regions far removed from the front lines, complicating security efforts and disrupting civilian life. Ukrainian strikes have led to fuel shortages and operational challenges across various Russian regions, marking a shift in the conflict’s dynamics.
Efforts spearheaded by the United States and other parties to negotiate an end to hostilities remain at an impasse, with Washington’s attention focused on the Middle East and Moscow pursuing full control over eastern Ukraine. The UN has highlighted a concerning increase in civilian casualties amid nearly four and a half years of conflict.
