Ukrainian drone attacks over the weekend resulted in the deaths of at least eight people across several Russian regions, according to regional officials and government authorities. The strikes targeted a range of locations, including critical infrastructure and commercial facilities, as Ukraine seeks to disrupt Russia’s ability to sustain its military operations.
In Belgorod, a border region near Ukraine, a drone strike hit an area adjacent to a playground, killing one child and wounding two others, according to Alexander Shuvayev, the region’s acting governor. Maria Lvova-Belova, Russia’s commissioner for children’s rights, condemned the incident, labeling it an “inhumane terrorist act” by Ukraine. Local authorities reported that the attacks in Belgorod resulted in three fatalities and five injuries.
Further east, Ukrainian drones struck a warehouse belonging to Wildberries, Russia’s largest online retailer, in the Samara region, approximately 800 kilometers from the frontlines, said Governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev. Despite the warehouse being hit, regional officials reported no casualties. Since mid-July, Ukrainian forces have targeted multiple Wildberries sites in an effort to hamper the company’s operations, a move aimed at undermining Russian economic stability.
In the Saratov region, two individuals were killed in drone strikes on a residential building in the city of Engels, which also houses a military airbase. Governor Roman Busargin reported damage to civil infrastructure in both Engels and the nearby city of Saratov, which is home to a major oil refinery. Ukrainian military forces claimed responsibility for attacks on the Engels airbase and the Saratov refinery, which led to fires at both locations. Additionally, Ukrainian forces reported striking an oil depot in the western Kaluga region.
The Udmurtia region also experienced casualties, with three people killed and two injured during drone attacks, according to acting governor Olga Abramova.
On the military front, Russia’s Defence Ministry stated its forces engaged in counterstrikes targeting infrastructure and two vessels carrying military cargo in the Ukrainian port of Mykolaiv, as well as a cargo ship in the Black Sea. Meanwhile, in southeastern Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia city, regional governor Ivan Fedorov reported that Russian-launched glide bombs killed one person and injured 21.
Russian authorities indicated that their air defenses intercepted 635 Ukrainian drones overnight, reflecting the intensity of the ongoing attacks. The reported escalation of cross-border strikes marks a continuation of Ukraine’s strategy to extend its military operations deeper into Russian territory to weaken Moscow’s war effort amid the conflict’s fifth year. The Ukrainian Defence Ministry did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the recent operations.
