Bill and John Bowdler, identical twins from Birmingham, are believed to be the oldest living identical twins in the United Kingdom, celebrating 82 years of a lifelong, inseparable bond. Born on March 21, 1944, the brothers have maintained a close relationship throughout their lives, sharing not only a household but also many daily routines, interests, and careers.

The lifelong bachelors attribute much of their continued health and vitality to their unique connection and shared lifestyle. They dress alike, a tradition started by their late mother, Agnes, with John typically selecting the matching outfits each day. The twins enjoy doing nearly everything together, from shopping and attending bingo to watching their favorite football team, Aston Villa. Despite their many similarities, they have one notable difference: Bill is fond of brown sauce, while John dislikes it.

After leaving school in 1960, Bill and John began working together at a wholesale distribution firm in Birmingham, remaining there for 31 years until the company folded. During their time unemployed, a chance encounter with a postman in a bowling league led them both to retrain and take up jobs as letter carriers, where they delivered mail in adjacent areas for over 17 years. They retired simultaneously in 2009, having spent the majority of their working lives side by side. Their longest time apart was several months during John’s recovery from appendicitis.

The twins’ likeness extends beyond appearance and interests. Both required cataract surgery on the same eyes, an occurrence noted as rare by their medical providers at Newmedica Birmingham. Prof Sai Kolli, who oversaw their treatment, remarked on the unusual nature of both twins needing the same procedure on the same eyes, with surgeries staggered over several months earlier this year.

John and Bill Bowdler have not married and have spoken about dedicating much of their time to caring for their parents and nearby relatives while growing up, which they say contributed to their close bond. Their connection is reflected in their habit of finishing each other’s sentences and their deep familiarity with one another’s habits and preferences.
