The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a resolution encouraging the use of the Equal Earth projection map in place of the traditional Mercator projection, a decision marking a significant shift in how global geography is represented. The resolution, passed on September 4 during a session in New York, aims to address long-standing concerns regarding the distortions inherent in the Mercator map, particularly its exaggeration of the size of northern hemisphere countries and minimization of landmasses in the Global South.
The Mercator projection, developed in the 16th century for European navigation, has faced criticism for centuries due to its distortion of relative landmass sizes. By the late 19th century, as maps became more accessible and geographical knowledge expanded, doubts about the accuracy of Mercator’s work grew. In the 1970s, critics argued that the projection contributed to underestimating the development needs and economic potential of Third World countries, labeling it a form of "cartographic colonialism."
In response, a group of cartographers introduced the Equal Earth projection in 2018, designed to provide a more accurate representation of continental sizes while maintaining a visually intuitive layout. The African Union endorsed this projection earlier this year, citing its more faithful portrayal of Africa’s scale. Supporters note that the Equal Earth projection makes clear the vastness of Africa — a continent into which the United States, China, India, Japan, Mexico, and much of Europe could fit together with room to spare.
Proponents see the move as more than a technical adjustment. The Correct The Map campaign — composed of African advocacy groups — argues that the Mercator projection perpetuates skewed perceptions of Africa and the broader Global South, reinforcing historical power imbalances. Lerato Mogoatlhe from Africa No Filter described the campaign as an effort to combat longstanding misinformation, calling the misrepresentation on world maps "not just a cartographic error, it’s a narrative issue." Kenyan geographer Kioko Muendo emphasized that maps influence political and economic perceptions beyond their traditional role for navigation.
During the UN debate, Togo’s foreign minister Robert Dussey characterized the resolution as an act of “cognitive justice” and “memorial reparation,” underscoring the political significance of map design. “A fair world begins with a fair map,” Dussey said, highlighting the role of cartography in shaping global understanding.
However, the resolution faced strong opposition from the United States. U.S. representative Yaryna Ferencevych criticized the initiative, calling it a distraction from more pressing international matters such as peace and prosperity and labeling it part of a "much larger and more radical ideological project." She argued that the resolution undermines the purpose of the UN and burdens its work with ideological disputes. The U.S. ultimately cast the sole vote against the measure, while 164 member states, including the United Kingdom, supported it and six abstained.
Following the vote, the UN clarified that the resolution does not ban the Mercator projection or mandate its replacement. Instead, it recommends that governments, educational institutions, international organizations, and technology companies adopt the Equal Earth projection and other equal-area maps when portraying relative sizes, while also teaching the inherent limitations of representing a spherical planet on a flat surface.
Despite the resolution’s adoption, it remains uncertain how broadly the shift will be implemented. Observers have noted that traditional Mercator maps continue to dominate many official and popular settings. For example, the layout of maps displayed in the U.S. White House is unlikely to change in the near future, and former President Donald Trump’s widely discussed misperceptions about Greenland’s size underscore the enduring influence of the Mercator distortion.
The resolution’s passage marks a notable moment in ongoing discussions about cartography’s role in geopolitics, history, and education, reflecting broader debates about fairness and representation in global narratives.
